Remember To Enjoy A Traditional Cream Tea On Your Self-Catering Cottage Holiday In Cornwall!

An essential ingredient to any holiday in Cornwall (especially if staying in a self-catering cottage - like Rooky's Nook) is a traditional Cornish Cream Tea.

Here is some of history, etiquette and tradition behind this iconic afternoon treat:
1. Clotted Cream was originally made by diary farmers to reduce the amount of waste from their milk.
2. It takes 6 pints of milk to make half a pound of Cornish Clotted Cream.
3. In 500BC it is thought that the recipe for Clotted Cream was passed to the Cornish by Phoenician traders who visited the area in search of Cornish tin.
The Perfect Equation for Cream Tea
4.  In 1998 the term Cornish Clotted Cream became a Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) by European Union directive, as long as the milk is produced in Cornwall and the minimum fat content is 55%.
5. In Cornwall the Cream Tea was traditionally served with a "Cornish split", a type of slightly sweet whitebread roll rather than a scone which was first buttered, then spread with strawberry jam, and finally topped with a spoonful of Clotted Cream.
6. This is probably why in Cornwall the proper way to eat a Cream Tea is with the Clotted Cream on top of the jam, (whilst in Devon it's the reverse - with the Clotted Cream under the jam!)
7. Rhoddas in Redruth are currently the largest producers of Clotted Cream here in the UK, making upto 25 tons of Clotted Cream every day from milk supplied from 151 local Cornish farms!
8.  Clotted Cream is made in other cultures, for different culinary uses. In India, it is called Malai. In the Middle East and former Turkish Empire countries, it is called Kajmak. In Mongolia, it is called öröm, and is added to salted tea.
9. Afternoon Tea and Cream Tea are two very different things:
Afternoon Tea should consist of finger sandwiches, scones with jam and Cornish Clotted Cream, and three cakes/patisseries
-  Cream Tea should consist of two plain scones, Cornish Clotted Cream and strawberry jam.
Both are traditionally served with tea to drink (as the name suggests!)
